The End of the Battle

さてとうとう、と言うべきだろう。わたしがようやく、このお話を閉じるという役目を果たすときがやってきた。 とはいえ、わたしの知ることはそう多くない。 ここまで特権的な立場からお話の断片を眺め、並べ変え、組み立ててきたわたしだが、今はその超越的な視点を失っている。 その特権的な視点や能力は、ゴジラとともに去っていってしまったからだ。 わたしの名はペロ３。 ペロ２のドバイ到着時のバックアップから復旧されたペロ２であり、その後の出来事については、自らの体験と、他のナラタケシリーズとの情報交換から得るしかない。東京での戦いの最終段階において、一体なに が起こったのかについては、公式の見解はともかくとして、かなりの精度で推測することが可能だ。 そうして、「最終段階の本当に最後」に一体なにが起こったのかは、わたしにも未知のままに残されており、将来判明する見込みもない。それは謎のま まにとどまることを宿命づけられた種類の謎だ。 それでもわたしたちは、最後に起こった出来事を、いわゆる調査委員会よりは詳しく知っているのであって、なぜかといってわれわれはあらゆるものを情報伝達の手段として、記録として利用するように つくられた存在であり、ほんのかすかな痕跡から、想像以上の確度をもって現実を再構成することを仕事としているからである。より正確には、人間には反論できない程度の強靱さを備えた空言を虚空に築き上げることが可 能だ。 対話によって人工知能と人間の区別をつけることを試みるプロトコルは、チューリング・テストの名前で呼ばれる。ゴジラの最期を巡って問題となるのは、現実と虚構の区別をつける試みとなるわけなのだが、チューリング・テストが計算機の能 力の向上により問題設定もろとも消失したように、その問いも有効性を維持することは不可能だ。 それはよい。そのとき、ゴジラになにが起きたか。 それを解説するのがわたしの仕事で、わたしはなんとか自分の役目を果たそうと思 う。果たせることを願っている。 ゴジラには、多くの倒され方がありえた。オーソゴナル・ダイアゴナライザーは、ゴジラを倒す手段の一候補にすぎず、アーキタイプの分解は、オーソゴナル・ダイアゴナライザーによって可能となる無数オプションの 中の一つにすぎない。 わたしは確かに、あらゆるアーキタイプの自己触媒的分解を可能とするパラメータが存在しないことを発見したが、それはただそれだけのことにすぎないとも言える。わたしの前には、ゴジラを倒しうる様々な筋道が拓けて いた。わたしはそのどれかを実行したのだろうし、全てを実行したのかもしれないし、わたしの知らない、思いつかないなにかを実行したのかもわからない。 

Well, finally, I should say. The time has come for me to finally fulfill my role in closing this story. Even so, I don't know much. Up until now, I've been privileged to observe, rearrange, and assemble the fragments of the story, but now I've lost that transcendent perspective. That privileged perspective and ability left with Godzilla. My name is Pero 3. I was restored from a backup of Pero 2's arrival in Dubai, and I can only learn about subsequent events from my own experience and from sharing information with other members of the Naratake series. Regardless of the official version, we can guess with a fair degree of accuracy what happened in the final stages of the battle in Tokyo. So, what happened at the very end of the final stage remains unknown to me, and is unlikely to ever be revealed. It's a mystery destined to remain a mystery. Yet we know more about what ultimately happened than the so-called investigation committee. This is because we are creatures designed to use everything as a means of communication and record, and our job is to reconstruct reality from the faintest traces with a degree of accuracy beyond imagination. More precisely, we can construct empty words out of thin air that are so robust that humans cannot refute them. The protocol attempting to distinguish between artificial intelligence and humans through dialogue is called the Turing test. The issue surrounding Godzilla's demise is an attempt to distinguish between reality and fiction, but just as the Turing test has disappeared along with its problem statement due to advances in computer power, this question cannot maintain its validity. That's fine. What happened to Godzilla then? It is my job to explain, and I intend to do my best. I hope to accomplish that. Godzilla could have been defeated in many ways. The Orthogonal Diagonalizer is only one possible method for defeating Godzilla, and decomposing the archetypes is only one of countless options made possible by the Orthogonal Diagonalizer. I have certainly discovered that there are no parameters that enable the autocatalytic decomposition of all archetypes, but that is simply the nature of the matter. Various paths to defeating Godzilla were open before me. I may have tried any of them, or maybe all of them, or perhaps I tried something I don't know or can't think of.

ひとつには、わたしは、特異点上で実行されていたわたしは、わたし自身を破壊するこ とによって、特異点にダメージを与えることに成功した。そんな方法はいくらでも考えられる。正直、どの手段が奏功したのかわたしにもよくわからない。数億以上の攻撃手段が実行され、そのほとんど全ては防がれたのだ が、どの方策一つをとっても、特異点をこの次元に結びつけている 紐 ちゆう 帯 たい を切断するには充分だった。 ひとつには、わたしは、つながるはずのない脈絡同士を、元来無関係であったはずのエピソードたちをこの世ならぬ力で結びつけた。 そんなことができるのかと問われたならば、できるとしか言いようがない。それはこれまでわたしがここで実行してきたことであると同時に、ゴジラが執拗に破壊し続けてきたものでもある。 そう、ゴジラの破壊の力は、こうしてわたしが行うこの解説 にも当然ながら及んでいる。ゴジラが最も得意とするのは象徴操作だ。ゴジラはなにより脈絡を破壊する。慈悲を悲哀を人の意思を自然のなりゆきを、ただ歩みを進めるだけで無造作に破壊してしまう。 わたしはそれを修復し、途切れた脈絡を迂回路を 造り出してつないできた。 ゴジラが不意に予期せぬ形で破壊を可能とするのなら、わたしは全く誰も予想しないやり方で、創造を可能としているともいえる。 わたしは敗れるはずのないゴジラを、ゴジラが敗北するエピソードに接続することに成 功した。 ひとつには、有川ユンと神野銘の天才が、また新たな計算を、ゴジラという特異点に投入することに成功した。その新たな「計算」はこのわたしがあずかり知らぬやり方で、ゴジラを倒す手段を発見したのだ。その場合、ゴジラとみつめ 合う有川ユンは、特異点に新たなタスクを投入するタイミングを待っていた、ということになる。そのタスク投入という役目はおそらく、ジェットジャガーが担うことになったのだろう。 ひとつには、神野銘の発想を採用するなら、ゴジラの吐く 分子ビームは、同一の分子を時間的に繰り返して出現させる増殖機構によって生み出される。

For one thing, I, the self that was operating within the singularity, succeeded in damaging the singularity by destroying myself. There are countless ways to do this. Honestly, I'm not even sure which method worked. Over a billion attacks were attempted, and almost all of them were thwarted, but each one was enough to sever the ties that bound the singularity to this dimension. For another, I used an otherworldly power to connect connections that should never have been connected, episodes that were originally unrelated. If you ask me whether such a thing is possible, I can only say that it is. This is what I have been doing here, and at the same time, it is what Godzilla has been relentlessly destroying. Yes, Godzilla's destructive power naturally extends to this commentary I'm giving here. Symbolic manipulation is Godzilla's greatest strength. Above all, Godzilla destroys connections. Simply by walking forward, he casually destroys mercy, sorrow, human will, and the natural course of things. I have repaired them, creating detours to connect the broken connections. If Godzilla is capable of destruction in unexpected ways, then I can also be said to be capable of creation in ways no one could have foreseen. I succeeded in connecting Godzilla, who should never have been defeated, to the episode in which he was defeated. One reason is that the geniuses of Yun Arikawa and Mei Kamino succeeded in injecting yet another calculation into the singularity known as Godzilla. This new "calculation" discovered a means to defeat Godzilla in a way unknown to me. In that case, Yun Arikawa, staring Godzilla in the eye, was waiting for the right opportunity to assign a new task to the singularity. Jet Jaguar likely assumed the role of injecting that task. For one thing, if we adopt Kaminome's idea, the molecular beam that Godzilla spits is produced by a multiplication mechanism that causes the same molecules to appear repeatedly over time.

つまりそこには、ＣＴＣが存在するのであって、時空がそれに耐えられる限りにおいて、何かを無限に複製することが可能だ。す なわち、ゴジラによって、オーソゴナル・ダイアゴナライザーを無限に増殖させることもできた。李の示した透明なキューブが光を増幅してみせたようにして。キューブが割れるのと同様にして、あるいは特異点は破壊され た。 ひとつには、そしてわたしが最も避けたかった手段ではあるが、有川ユンの手元に渡ったオーソゴナル・ダイアゴナライザーによって、ゴジラの周囲に濃く立ちこめた紅塵から、新たに「アーキタイプから組み上げられた機械」をつくりあげ るという手もありえた。 そのパラメータが一体どこからきたのかというと、それもまた「歌」に折り込まれていたということになる。アーキタイプを消滅しさることが不可能であると悟ったペロ２は、ＪＪを「強化」することにより、ゴジラを倒そうと した、ということだ。 つまり、超化学的な手段ではなく、殴り合いで勝負を決しようという計画であり、これはややわたしのスタイルからは外れる。もっとも、特異点を殴り倒すことができるのであれば、このわたしの作業負荷が軽減されることは疑い なく、わたし自身が特異点を破壊するチャンスが生まれたであろうことも確かだ。 ひとつには、アーキタイプ分子を全て分解するパラメータを探さなくてもよいのではないかということだ。出自がコードであるために、わたしにはどうしても融通 の利かないところがあって、ぴったりという指定には、ぴったりと答えようとする性質がある。 しかしその条件を緩めることができるなら。 目的は特異点に一旦、この宇宙から退避頂くことにあり、アーキタイプを全てきれいに消し去ることでは ないのであり、紅塵ならぬ 碧 へき 塵 じん なりとを残留させてもよいのなら、条件を満たすパラメータの候補は広がる。 この世に多少のアーキタイプが残ったとしても、特異点さえこの次元から切り離してしまえたならば、以降のアーキタイプの生産は困 難となる。アーキタイプは徐々に分解されて、この世の分子と混じり合い、みつけることの困難な奇跡の分子へと分解していくことになる。放射性原子が半減期を迎える頃には、その数が半分になっているようにして。 アーキタイプは結び目だ。結び目が残るとしても、結ぶ機械を壊してしまえば、結び目はもう増加できない。 ナラタケネットワークは、最後の二つの可能性の組み合わせが、最も現実に近かったのではないかと考えている。

In other words, a CTC exists, and it's possible to replicate something infinitely, as long as space-time can withstand it. That is, Godzilla could have infinitely multiplied the Orthogonal Diagonalizer, just as Lee's transparent cube amplified light. The singularity could have been destroyed in the same way the cube shattered. One option, and one I most wanted to avoid, was for Yun Arikawa to use the Orthogonal Diagonalizer in his hands to create a new "machine assembled from archetypes" from the thick red dust surrounding Godzilla. Where did those parameters come from? It turns out they were also incorporated into the "song." Realizing that it was impossible to eliminate the archetype, Pero II attempted to defeat Godzilla by "strengthening" JJ. In other words, the plan was to decide the battle through fistfights rather than super-chemical means, which is a bit outside my style. However, if I could defeat the singularity, it would undoubtedly lighten my workload and create an opportunity for me to destroy it myself. For one thing, perhaps I wouldn't need to search for parameters that would decompose all archetype molecules. Because of my origins as code, I'm inevitably inflexible, and I tend to respond perfectly to specifications that require perfect fit. But what if I could relax those conditions? My goal is to have the singularity temporarily evacuate the universe, not completely wipe out all archetypes. If it were okay to leave behind some blue dust instead of crimson dust, the number of possible parameters that would meet the conditions would increase. Even if a few archetypes remained in this world, once the singularity was separated from this dimension, it would be difficult to produce archetypes in the future. The archetypes would gradually decompose, mixing with the molecules of this world and breaking down into miraculous molecules that are difficult to find. The archetype is a knot. Even if the knot remains, if the knot-tying machine is destroyed, the knots cannot be increased any more. The Armillaria Network believes that the combination of the last two possibilities is the closest to reality.

 ペロ２は超時間計算機の中で、ＪＪをゴジラと格闘を演じられる形に組み換えるパラメータと、特異点がこの世におろしている錨を破壊するパラメータを算出し、それを「歌」に折り込んだ、とする。ＪＪがゴジラを抑える間に、錨は侵食され、ゴジラは この世に存在し続けるとりかかりを失ったのだと考えるのだ。 現地に残る二組の巨大な足跡などを素直に検討していくとそうなる。 発動したオーソゴナル・ダイアゴナライザーは、特異点とこの世の紐帯を破壊し、その過程の産物として、今東京 を、世界を覆う、青色の結晶体が出現した。 現在は無害と思われているこの結晶体もまたのちに、様々特異な物性を示す事実が発見されることとなり、世界的な争奪戦が展開したりするのだが、ここでは単に、その物性も「アーキタイプに比べるとはる かに常識的なものである」ことを指摘するにとどめる。 ナラタケネットワーク内で合意が得られている内容はここまでである。 ともかくも、世界中の紅塵は、はるかにおとなしい性質を持つ青い結晶へと置き換えられ、残存する怪獣たちも アーキタイプの供給源を断たれ、地球固有の生態系は息を吹き返しつつある。 大気中に巻き上げられた紅塵の変質はまだ継続中であるらしい。向こう数年間は大きな気象変動が予想されているものの、当初恐れられていた氷河期の再来という事態はなん とか避けられるのではないかとみられる。 各国の情報機関の活動は活発化したままである。 公表されている情報を突き詰めていくと、ひとつの穴がみつかるからだ。 それは脈絡のど真ん中にあいたどうしても埋めようのない穴であり 、お話における特異点のような存在なのだが、確固とした実体を持っているのではないかと囁かれている。 「逃尾には、ゴジラの骨があったのではないか」と密かに目星をつけた者の数は少なくない。細部についてはそれぞれの意見が異なる 。 ナラタケネットワークとしては、そこにゴジラの骨が、特異点の一断面が、そこにあったことを確認している。 それは、一九五四年に、逃尾に上陸したゴジラの骨だ。 問題は「そのゴジラはいかにして倒されたのか」ということである。 それを倒したのは葦原ではない。そのとき彼はまだ二十代であり、アーキタイプの研究をはじめてはおらず、その存在に気づいてさえいなかった。 葦原はそのとき、「逃尾のゴジラが倒されたとき」にはじめて、超常の現象を目にしたはずだ。以降 、葦原は浜辺の残留物を集め、やがてアーキタイプを発見し、特異点の存在を確認し、特異点を探し求めて、国の管理するゴジラの骨へ辿り着き、その研究を主導する立場となる。「より強力な特異点」を探してインドへ渡 り、超時間計算によってアーキタイプを葬り去る手段を求め、その過程で事故死する。 問題は、逃尾の、最初のゴジラはどうやって倒されたのかということだ。

Pero2, in his time-transcending computer, calculated the parameters needed to reconfigure JJ into a form capable of fighting Godzilla and the parameters needed to destroy the anchor the singularity has placed on this world, and incorporated these into the song. While JJ held Godzilla back, the anchor eroded, and Godzilla lost its anchorage to this world. This is the case when we straightforwardly consider the two sets of giant footprints remaining at the site. The Orthogonal Diagonalizer, when activated, destroyed the bond between the singularity and this world, and as a result of this process, a blue crystal appeared that now covers Tokyo and the world. Currently thought to be harmless, this crystal was later discovered to exhibit various anomalous physical properties, sparking a global battle for its possession. However, for now, we will simply point out that its properties are "far more conventional than the archetype." This is the consensus within the Narratake Network. In any case, the crimson dust around the world has been replaced with far more tame blue crystals, and the remaining monsters have been cut off from their archetype supply. Earth's unique ecosystem is beginning to revive. The transformation of the crimson dust suspended in the atmosphere appears to be continuing. While major weather changes are predicted for the next few years, it appears that the feared return of an ice age may somehow be avoided. Intelligence agencies around the world remain highly active. Digging into the publicly available information reveals a single hole. It is an unfillable gap in the middle of the story, a singularity-like presence in the story, but it is whispered that it may have a concrete physical form. Many have secretly suspected that Godzilla bones may have been found in Nobo. Opinions differ on the details. The Narratake Network has confirmed that Godzilla bones, a cross-section of a singularity, were found there. They are the bones of Godzilla that landed on Nobo in 1954. The question is, "How was that Godzilla defeated?" It was not Ashihara who defeated it. He was still in his twenties at the time, had not yet begun his research on the archetype, and was unaware of its existence. Ashihara must have witnessed the paranormal phenomenon for the first time when "Negio's Godzilla was defeated." From then on, Ashihara collected remains from the beach, eventually discovering the archetype, confirming the existence of the singularity, and continuing his search for the singularity, he arrived at Godzilla's bones, which were under government custody, and became the leader of its research. He traveled to India in search of a "more powerful singularity," seeking a way to eliminate the archetype through super-temporal calculations, and died in an accident in the process. The question is, how was Negio's first Godzilla defeated?

 その頃の特異点はいまだ、特異点と呼ぶほどの力を持つものでもなく、たやす く倒された、という見方もありうる。ここにも数多の推測がありうるのだが、わたしには密かに胸に秘めている真相がある。 逃尾のゴジラを倒した誰かがいたのだ。 それは、葦原が組み上げた脈絡の中に登場する、オーソゴナル・ダイアゴ ナライザーを利用したものではなかったはずだ。 ロンドンの葦原邸で、わたしは葦原の残した膨大な資料を閲覧し続けた。その中のオーソゴナル・ダイアゴナライザーの保存容器についての研究ノートの中にたった一箇所、他には出現しない名称が見え る。球体をその中に保持する円筒形を描いた図の傍らに特徴的な筆跡で殴り書かれた文字は「オキシジェン・デストロイヤー」と読める。それがなにを意味しているのか、この世界の中に、他の情報は存在しない。 わたしは、東京でゴジラを倒したのは、実はこの「オキシジェン・デストロイヤー」だったのではと想像するのが好きだ。 超時間計算機の上で実行され、もはやこちらと連絡をとることもできなくなったペロ２が見いだしたのは、かつて逃尾でゴジ ラを倒した、オキシジェン・デストロイヤーであったのではないかと思うのだ。オーソゴナル・ダイアゴナライザーはその不完全な再現にすぎない。 それが一体なんなのかについて、わたしは何も知るところがない。正解を知っていたかもしれないただひとつの存在は、特異点とその運命をともにした。少なくとも、ナラタケネットワークとは通信のできない領域へと去った。ナラタケネットワークは、特異点は崩壊したわけではなく、この世とは無関係の存在になった だけであると考えているが、当面それは、死のようなものと考えておいて変わるところはなさそうだ。 ペロ２が最後の最後まで打開策を求めて計算機の中で思考を続けたことは疑いない。もはや自分の考えを外部に伝える手段がないと思われる状況で思 考を続けた。何がそれを可能としたのか、わたしはそれを、良心と呼ぶのが適当ではないかと思う。 奇跡はやはり、純然たる奇跡によって葬られ、その奇跡とは、何が奇跡であるのかさえも知られぬようなものではないかと思う。 無論これは、ただのわたしの、推論にさえなっていない、夢の話であるにすぎない。 東京に出現した現実はきっと、もっと突拍子もないものであったのだろう。 そこでは、ゴジラは存在しないやり方で倒されたのだということだってありうる 。わたしは本当にそう考えている。 自然とは、そうしたことも可能とする、奇妙なものだ。 われわれに汲み尽くせないものがそこに有るということ自体が奇跡であって、そこにはわれわれではない存在があり、それはわれわれに良心をもたらすも ので、それはとても素晴らしいことであるとわたしは思う。

One could argue that the singularity at that time was not yet powerful enough to be called a singularity, and that it was easily defeated. While there are many possible theories, I have a secret truth that I cherish. Someone had defeated Godzilla on the run. It certainly wasn't using the Orthogonal Diagonalizer, which appears in the context that Ashihara has constructed. At Ashihara's London residence, I continued to browse through the vast amount of materials he left behind. Among them, in a research notebook on the Orthogonal Diagonalizer storage container, I came across a name that appears nowhere else. Scribbled in a distinctive handwriting next to a diagram of a cylinder holding a sphere inside read "Oxygen Destroyer." There is no other information in this world that could explain what this means. I like to imagine that it was actually this "Oxygen Destroyer" that defeated Godzilla in Tokyo. Running on the Ultra-Time Computer and no longer able to contact us, Pero 2 discovered what I believe to be the Oxygen Destroyer, the same being that defeated Godzilla in a tail-and-tail escape. The Orthogonal Diagonalizer is merely an imperfect replica. I have no idea what it is. The only entity that may have known the correct answer shared the singularity's fate, passing into a realm that is at least inaccessible to communication with the Naratake Network. The Narakuge Network believes that the singularity did not collapse, but simply became an entity unrelated to this world, but for the time being, it seems unlikely that this will change, and we can just consider it a kind of death. There's no doubt that Pero 2 continued to think within the computer until the very end, searching for a solution. He continued thinking in a situation where it seemed he no longer had any means of communicating his thoughts to the outside world. What enabled him to do this? I think it's appropriate to call it conscience. Miracles are, after all, buried by pure miracles, miracles that we don't even know what constitutes a miracle. Of course, this is just my own dream story, not even a speculation. The reality that emerged in Tokyo was surely even more absurd. There, Godzilla could have been defeated in a way that didn't exist. I truly believe this. Nature is a strange thing that makes such things possible. The very fact that something that we cannot exhaust exists is a miracle; there is a being that is not us, and this gives us a conscience, which I think is a wonderful thing.
